How A Simple Three Letter Word Can Hold The Key To An Unbelievable Future

askingHave you ever been given the opportunity to ask for something and after you received what you asked for, wished you had asked for more? I have on several occasions. It was even more disappointing when I realized I could have had more had I just asked. I could kick myself at those times.

On several occasions I have either gone to someone home or to a function where they were serving food. When it was time to eat I would act so mannerly that when offered the chance to have a larger portion, I would turn it down. I accompanied my “no thank you” with this broad smile on my face.

Having sat down to eat and with each mouthful, the savory meal would only increase the volume in my head of how stupid I was in not accepting the offer. I kicked myself over and over again knowing I could have had more but failed to ask for it. Am I the only one who have ever done this? I didn’t think so.

I look at these moments and wondered why is I that I did this. I did it because of the way I was raised by my parents. I also did it because I don’t want to appear greedy and possibly give others something to talk about. Another reason, which I believe is a big one, is piety – a reverential fear or devotion.

How pious can it be when I am kicking myself over such a decision? Outwardly it may look that way, but I can assure you it doesn’t look that way on the inside. It’s anything but.

I think I can be this way or let me say, was this way. I think I no longer am, for the most part. I have now seen the light that I can ask big and it is okay. I do not want to miss out anymore by limiting my ask. I am now more committed to the words of the Apostle James: “You have not because you ask not” and of Jesus: “Ask and you shall receive.”

The king Hezekiah learned this very valuable lesson when he asked the prophet for a sign to know that what was promised him would come to pass:

“The shadow always moves forward,” Hezekiah replied, “so that would be easy. Make it go ten steps backward instead.” So Isaiah the prophet asked the Lord to do this, and he caused the shadow to move ten steps backward on the sundial of Ahaz! (2 Kings 20:10, 11 NLT)

That is asking big if I ever heard one.

Here are three necessary keys to an unbelievable future:

  1. Learn to ask big. Ask as if your life depended on it, which it may
  2. Believe you can have what you ask for
  3. Don’t limit the One who can fulfill your ask

What are your thoughts on asking? I would love to hear. Please take a moment and leave your comment below.
