3 Steps In Overcoming The Approval Seeking

Podcast Summary:

In this episode I discuss the issue of individuals who find themselves caught in a repeated attempt to seek approval in most of their decision making process. This is more evident within relationships. The drive to be approved leads to maladaptive behaviors. Some of these behaviors are displayed when there is a recurring theme of choosing partners on the basis of approval seeking. Once approval is given, an exchange occurs where one partner trades approval for whatever they had on their agenda.

Eventually something happens where it becomes apparent that the relationship was formed mostly on the need to be approved.

Here are three steps in putting an end to approval seeking:

  1. Forgive your father for what he failed to do. Build a case for him instead of against him. Argue for why he might not have been able to give you the approval you needed.
  2. Open the door of the prison you have kept him in and release him. Keep the door open or better yet, take it off its hinges and get rid of it.
  3. Declare your self free and begin to act free. Be intentional each day until it become a part of who you are.
