depressionAccording to a recent report, researchers find that nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug, and more than half receive at least two prescriptions.

Mayo Clinic researchers report that antibiotics, antidepressants and painkiller opioids are the most common prescriptions given to Americans. Twenty percent of U.S. patients were also found to be on five or more prescription medications. (http://atlanta.cbslocal.com/2013/06/19/study-70-percent-of-americans-on-prescription-drugs-one-fifth-take-5-or-more/)

Prescription drugs are a billion dollar industry. Drugs that are related to mood disorders such as depression are at an all time high. Why are so many people depressed?

I know that there are a number of reasons that lead to depression. Everyone at some point in their life is going to have a mild form of depression, which is quite normal.

I have had those moments where the overwhelming sense of loss, feeling like a failure, lack of accomplishment and other resources became contributing factors to such feeling. Thank God these were only temporary feelings. I had to find a way with self talk to emerge from what could easily become full blown depression.

Unfortunately this is what happens to most people who find themselves depressed. They do not have the inner strength to get out of the slump they are in. The longer they stay In that state the more the need for antidepressants.

Studies have shown that most cases of depression can be overcome with medication and therapy combined; not one without the other. This is what I recommend to my clients who fit the criteria for clinical depression.

The need for antidepressant could be reduced substantially if one could find a way to experience a cheerful heart. This one suggestion could radically make all the difference.

Solomon – the wisest man that ever lived and one who himself experienced deep depression, puts it this way: A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength. (Proverbs 17:22 NLT)

How do you develop or obtain a cheerful heart? Here are three suggestions.

  1. Change your dial: Be intentional to whom and what you expose your sense of seeing and hearing. Change the dial of the station playing in your head as well as your current playlist.
  2. Change your lens: The lens of which I speak is your attitude and worldview. You might need help from a therapist with this.
  3. Change your hood: Surround yourself with others who have a cheerful heart. Remove yourself from surroundings and people that are depressing and negative.

What other thoughts do you have on why so many people are on antidepressant or what other suggestions do you have to develop a cheerful heart? Please comment in the box below. Thanks.
